Welcome to Algebra! You can call me Ms. Cori or Ms. Doherty (just make sure when you are sending me an email, that you are spelling it right--assignments don't count when you email it to my alter-egos...corey, corie, kory, dorthy, dorhety etc.) You'll learn a lot about me this year, and I expect to learn a lot about you, too. I can give you my full spiel here, but I'd rather leave that up for discovery.
One thing you should definitely know about me is that I LOVE math, and am passionate about Mathematics education. A lot of people (parents included!) run around saying, "I'm just not a math person". Well, that all stops here. You know why? You just typed in this web address as" I AM A MATH PERSON." Why yes, you are! We know I am (obviously!), but did you know you are, too? If you didn't know that, or you're not feeling it yet, give me a chance, because we are all math people, born mathematicians, in fact. We're going to rediscover all of our innate skills and do a lot of problem-solving this year. You're also going to remind yourself every time you type in the address for our website! Type it and say it out loud: I am a math person!
One other thing you should know about me is my philosophy when it comes to teaching. It's right up there at the top: I don't teach math, I teach human beings. Of course, of course...I do teach math (and you all are going to learn a lot of it!), but it's more than that. It's about all of us: you, me and our classroom community. It's not enough for me that you leave my class knowing how to factor a quadratic equation. I want you to know a little bit more about the world, your place in it and how to make it even better! I believe in the potential of all students, knowing that with the right approach, encouragement and motivation, every student can be successful. I want you leaving my class knowing that you are a math person, and that, given the very hard work that it takes (you are going to work very hard!), you can be whatever kind of person you want to be. I also expect, that no matter where you go, you are going to use a lot of what we learn this year.
So that old question, "When are we ever going to use this?" Already answered: ALL THE TIME.
Bring all that you have, work as hard as you can and say it with me: I am a math person!
